J.W.Anderson X Topshop Collaboration

Just in time for London Fashion Week comes one of the best of Topshop’s designer collaborations – hitting shops and online on 15th February. In fact – this collection, entitled “Twisted Sisters”, is J.W. Anderson’s last collaboration with the High Street brand – and is one of the most covetable ones they’ve had in a long time. J.W. Anderson’s characteristic preppy style gets a dark twist, blending sleek, sporty looks with schoolgirl knits.

A grungy twist

This collection is full of the usual boarding-school style picks that have marked the designer’s previous Topshop collections – including a prim mid-length pinafore dress, and school-mistress-severe pleated kilts in grey and navy. While they might sound stuffy, they’d be perfectly offset with frilled ankle socks and the tough flat leather boots from the collection. The white leather loafers from the collection give a boyish twist, for a touch of tomboy style.

One of the biggest issues with the last collection was the seriously questionable quality of some of the items – and it looks like they’ve paid more attention to detail this time. Stiff silk taffeta brings up the collection to a more luxurious level – in mid length shorts that are perfect for spring, and a pleated school dress that gives a grungy revamp to the classic LBD.

Staples to covet

The collection’s not all about playing dress-up in school uniform – there are also some great neutrals that would be ideal to build up a capsule wardrobe for the coming season. I love the pale neoprene dress – lilac looks fresh for Spring, and will look great paired with this season’s neon accessories. The neoprene skirt is a great work pick – its structure the perfect partner for a crisp white shirt, while the dark-washed denim shorts would look great on a dress-down day, with a pretty blouse, accessories and sharp heels.

For more casual looks, Anderson’s striped shirts will look great with skinnies for a weekend off-duty look, embroidered subtly with an anchor motif. The denim shirt meanwhile is a cool alternative to the usual boyfriend styles around – adding a touch of laidback tailoring to the fit. The bold angular sunnies are also a great – and affordable – pick from the collection – ideal for adding some boyish cool to a low-key outfit.

Keeping it fun

J.W. Anderson’s collections are always about having fun with fashion – and his last collaboration is no exception. Cute and quirky motifs abound – the mustang sweater adds a touch of Americana and the swallow print top adds a touch of colour to this nearly monochrome collection, but the top pick has to be the dodo-motif polo shirt and jumper. Utterly unusual, unexpected and endearing, the dodo jumper is perfectly slouchy, light enough for spring – and with a touch of cashmere to the mix – deliciously soft.

J.W.Anderson’s Topshop’s collaboration is a major improvement from his previous ones, and has some fantastic picks that will be a versatile addition to any wardrobe. With the addition of premium materials like silk and cashmere, it’s also a great value collection – delivering lasting style, rather than disposable fashion.
