Penitentiary Fitness: Unusual Yet Effective

Fitness and diet books are all too often boring and somehow when you’ve finished reading it you want nothing more than to devour a tub of full-fat ice cream and to never move again. It is often the case that people have the best of intentions and start a new workout, diet or join the gym and after a month or so they lose interest and motivation and quit. At the time it doesn’t feel like quitting, because you simply don’t care anymore, but when you look back after gaining 30 pounds you realise it definitely was quitting and wish you’d at least put down the Mars Bar.

John HawkinsJohn Barrett Hawkins’ latest book offers an in depth look at how to achieve the body that you want, whether it be weight loss, bulking or lean muscle that you need. Perhaps you have heard of this type of thing before, but this has an added twist; the program he recommends was designed with the penitentiary in mind. No gym equipment required. When I first heard about the book I assumed this is all it was; bodybuilding and fat loss using only the weight of your own body. For me that was interesting enough as I find gymnasts fascinating. In reality this book covers far more ground than simply outlining workouts and is the product of decades of research and experience.

John Barrett Hawkins outlines why he was in prison and how his mistake cost him everything he was proud of, leading to imprisonment and severe depression. Through educating himself he turned his life around and now aims to help others with his knowledge. He drew a direct link between exercise and mental health and although this is not a new concept his work is inspiring people to take action, change their bodies and their minds at the same time.

back coverFor a reasonably short book it covers a great deal of information. Many diet books offer quick fix ideas that you don’t even have to understand thoroughly to benefit from. We all know that in the long run they don’t work, yet people still buy them. Penitentiary Fitness offers explanations for everything from why breakfast is so important to why swimming burns more fat. He not only outlines meal plans and workouts, but also demonstrates the logic behind why we work out and the overall effect it can have on your life and attitude.

Overall this is a very insightful book and it is worthwhile taking your time over it so you don’t miss out on any of the gems of wisdom contained within. The information is laid out in a clear and engaging manner and John Barrett Hawkins has a very honest tone to his writing that instantly draws you in. This is definitely the type of book for someone who is serious about having a healthy lifestyle and making the most of their opportunities. Perhaps it should have a warning label: ‘Not for the faint-hearted’.
