Topshop goes Comic with their latest collection

Topshop Comic Collection

Topshop’s recent collections have admittedly been a little hit and miss – an excess of neon, 80s ‘inspiration’ and 90s flashbacks have all felt a little lacklustre. The newest pre-Spring collection, inspired by comic books – could easily go wrong, but in fact there are a few gems worth investing in.

Freaks, geeks and… dweebs?

Slogan tees are going to be a big trend this summer – whether you like it or not. Topshop’s mildly tongue in cheek, irreverent take – with playground insults like ‘Geek’ and ‘Dweeb’ emblazoned across cropped tees and candy-coloured sweatshirts make the trend a little more passable – contrasted with a luxe leather mini, these could definitely be more fashionista and less clichéd hipster.

Letters and numbers make their marks in other forms too though – chunky collegiate style fonts are found across sexy tube skirts and cosy joggers. While I’d give the joggers a pass, the ‘LOVE’ print tube skirt is a perfect way to work the graphic, monochrome look, and could easily become a long term staple.

Pixels and polka dots

Topshop Comic Collection 2

Graphic prints and patterns take the look slightly on a tangent – from comic books to computer games. It’s cute – although it’s a look you may soon tire of, come the end of spring. The polka dot jumper or Minnie-Mouse inspired headband are both fun and flirty – or you could just go the whole hog with a Mickey print cropped tee.

There’s lots of digital inspiration too – pixel heart shaped jewellery is fun and quirky, although the Tron-style grid leggings may be a little unflattering on most of us!

Comic book heroine

Surprisingly, the Comic Collection has a whole host of gems that could easily pass for Topshop’s more discerning ‘Boutique’ lines – with bold, minimal design and block colours – this is for the grown up comic book heroine. Think less ‘Wonderwoman’ and more of a grown-up Enid from Ghost World. A colour block tunic in white and teal is perfect with tights for a graphic, 60s silhouette, while the a-line black skirt is given just enough toughness with wrap-around zips.

Topshop Comic Collection 3The lime-green neoprene satchel is ideal for lugging laptops around, while the neon-hued knits will be ideal for cosy weekends. A juice lemon crop top looks girly in lace – and would be great paired with a crisp white mini. Not to mention the Latch cross over platforms – guaranteed to sell out in moments – they’re perfect now (once the snow melts) with chunky socks and skirts, but will be equally divine with a floaty dress on a hot summer night.

Then there’s just the downright crazy. Bumbags, hipster-moustache prints and leopard sport rollerskates? We’ll give it a pass, thanks. But while the Comic Collection may have a love-it-or-hate-it flavour, there’s still a lot to look forward to. It’s the perfect way to reinvent your look after a dreary and cold winter – a bolt of pixelated energy definitely won’t go amiss. The collection hits the website on the 18th January – or check out your local branch of Topshop to ogle the goods in the flesh.
